Literacy

At St Catherine’s we believe that Literacy is an essential capability for academic, personal and social success and effectiveness for all students.

Literacy is a social practice. It requires the flexible and sustainable mastery of a repertoire of practices with texts of traditional and contemporary communication technologies via spoken language, print and multimedia. (Literate Futures, 2000)

At St Catherine’s we hold high expectations for the literacy achievement of every student. Teaching literacy means explicitly teaching the language needed to read, write, speak, listen, view and create in meaningful ways in all contexts and curriculum areas.

To do this effectively, we use the ‘Gradual Release of Responsibility’ approach and the ‘Context/Text’ model of language that underpins the Australian Curriculum General Capability: Literacy and the Australian Curriculum: English.
